The lance rest was not used to simply hold the weight of the lance, as the English name might suggest, but to arrest the rearward movement of the weapon. The usage of a lance rest can be more readily gleaned by looking at the French term "arrêt", or "arrest". On some suits of armour, especially those of Italian design, the pauldrons would usually be asymmetrical, with one pauldron covering less (for mobility) and sporting a cut-away to make room for a lance rest. A pauldron typically consists of a single large dome-shaped piece to cover the shoulder (the "cop") with multiple lames attached to it to defend the arm and upper shoulder. Pauldrons cover the shoulder area, tend to be larger than spaulders, covering the armpit and parts of the back and chest. Spaulders are pieces of armour in a harness of plate armour, they are steel covering the shoulder with bands (lames) joined by straps of leather or rivets. List of Elements in the Periodic Table Element Name In addition to what is shown in most chemistry classrooms, there are some additional rows given for unstable elements called transactinides which have been created in laboratories but not found in nature. It is a rectangular grid of the elements, with periods going across and families going down. The form of the table that is most familiar to us today is usually referred to as the short-form periodic table, or the common (or standard) form of the table. Not only did he come up with the organization of them, but he also predicted the existence of many elements before they were discovered. He had been experimenting with organizing the elements according to their chemical properties and eventually noticed that certain trends existed within groups of elements. The periodic table was first published by Dimitri Mendeleev in 1869. And each element is represented by a symbol which is usually one or two letters taken from the name. All the elements of these groups have their own properties and reactivities.Ĭolor coding can be used to distinguish between columns (groups). The groups between these two columns are alkaline-earth metals, transition metal groups, inner transition metal groups, non-metal groups, halogens. At the left of the table is a group that contains reactive metals, such as sodium and potassium. Each row of elements in the periodic table is called a period, and the elements are grouped according to the fill of electrons in their valence shells.Īt the right of the table is a group that contains inert gases elements with full valence shells and which are generally unreactive. It is also ordered by element block according to electron shell configuration. It is organized by atomic number with hydrogen being number 1, helium being number 2, etc. These two categories go from left to right across horizontal rows (known as a period), and up & down within vertical columns (known as a group). The periodic table is called the "Periodic Table" because it's organized into periods and groups. The periodic table can most simply be described as a chart that organizes the chemical elements of matter into an easy-to-identify visual flow chart. The vertical columns, or groups, indicate elements with similar chemical properties. What is a Simple Definition of the Periodic Table? When the outer shell is full of electrons, the element is a noble gas. As you move across the periodic table, it indicates gradual filling of electron shells. For instance, alkali metals, transition metals, nonmetals, or noble gases 4. Often the periodic table is color-coded to indicate similar types of elements. For instance, the bottom row represents the unreactive noble gases. The horizontal rows of the table, or periods, indicate chemical reactivity. The position of an element in the periodic table gives you a quick indication of what properties it has and how it is likely to behave. The scientific community settled on the current one based on Mendeleev's 1869 periodic table, because it is so useful.Of the following statements about the periodic table, which one is INCORRECT? 1. In the early years, there were actually multiple ways of graphically representing information about the elements. Without Bird or Pig to keep their companion reasonable, what if Fish-face got into trouble? Or got lonely?ĭang. Tommy was fine with Pig and Bird-he’d warmed up (ha) to Pig since that one time they were left behind together-but it just occurred to him now, would Fish-face be alright on his own? The alien was a right idiot, wailing dramatically and having to pet or snuggle Tommy every five minutes. This was the first time Fish-face left by himself, with Pig and Bird remaining behind. Tommy watched closely as the door slid shut, meaning the attached shuttle was departing. With a huff, Fish-face shoved at Tommy’s forehead in a chiding yet affectionate way, before drifting out the door, calling farewell songs. Fish-face shot a glare at them, his scales becoming a darker orange. The alien immediately started rubbing his nose, spluttering clicks and clucks, while Pig gave a deep snorting laugh and Bird sighed tiredly. It was worth it, to see Fish-face’s abject horror, orange overtaking the pink and yellow of his scales to make him look like a misshapen carrot. Fish-face didn’t taste good either, like cheap plastic-y sushi. The lady at the zoo who’d let him pet a snake would’ve been mad at him if he’d licked it, and licking a snake/lizard/fish-like alien most likely wasn’t much better. Leaning forward suddenly, Tommy sticks his tongue out and licks Fish-face’s nose.įish-face yelps and jolts back as Tommy runs his tongue over his teeth. Tommy scrounges up his nose and tolerates it for about ten seconds, before deciding it’s time to shut the clingy bastard up. Fish-face is cupping Tommy’s head in his cool, scaley hands, crooning and cooing and peering fondly into Tommy’s eyes. Tommy would be thinking that through more, but he’s a bit preoccupied by Fish-face squeezing his own face. Bird and Pig stand in the hall to see him off, but don’t gear up themselves. Most of the time he’s with Fish-face, but as he gets used to the other two, he hangs out with them as well.įish-face is preparing to leave the ship again, oddly on his own this time. Even when they’re not directly paying attention to him, Tommy likes to be in the room. Fish-face distracts himself with his holo-screen, Pig falls asleep, and Bird tinkers and cooks and whatnot. He gets alone time, sure, when the aliens are doing other things. He’s not sure what the deal is now, but he shrugs it off. Maybe he’s always had it-he’s used to nervousness, of course, but he’d associated that with being tossed from house to house so often. He’s not exactly sure when this feeling started happening to him. Whether he’s in the kitchen with Bird, or living room with Pig, or in Fish-face’s bedroom, he gets a bit antsy if he’s alone. The alien tattoo can mean whatever you want it to me to you as the wearer.Tommy generally likes to be in a room with one of the other aliens in it. If you decide to go this route, maybe think about incorporating some other space objects such as planets, galaxies, spacecraft, or laser beams.Ī common question people who are looking to get an alien tattoo might ask is, what does getting an alien tattoo mean? However, there is no specific meaning behind the alien tattoo. Others will choose to get larger-scale alien tattoos that can cover their entire chest. These tattoos give some flexibility of placement as they can be put into smaller places like the fingers or toes. Some alien tattoos are also small pictures of the iconic alien head. Some examples of this include an alien playing golf or having a drink. Alien tattoos can also have a jovial feel to them as well. These tattoos will commonly be from the famed movies we are all so used to. If you are going in the direction of a realistic alien tattoo, then it will appear more sinister. There are plenty of good references for detailed, realism-style tattoos as well as happy-go-lucky designs. Some can look very cartoon-like while others will look hyper-realistic.
